When I was a sophomore in college I was introduced to the photography of Joel-Peter Witkin. I was completely blown away. I'd been a huge fan of H.R. Giger for many many years at that point and felt as though Witkin's work was photographed in Giger's fucked up mind. It was equally repulsive and beautiful; something I could not look away from. However, as I continued to read up on Witkin and look at more and more of his photographs I realized that they were so much more than nightmare imagery set in exquisite tableaus. His work is mythic.
